Helping with Homestead Tour Connects Lucas County Homeowners with Property Tax Savings

Lucas County Auditor Katie Moline is launching the 2026 Helping with Homestead Tour to help eligible homeowners learn about the Homestead Exemption, receive assistance with their applications, and connect with local resources.

The Homestead Exemption provides property tax relief to qualifying seniors, people who are totally and permanently disabled, certain disabled veterans, and surviving spouses of first responders who died in the line of duty. Last year, the program provided more than $14 million in property tax relief to Lucas County homeowners, with an average savings of approximately $580.

Additional savings coming in 2027

Thanks to the passage of Ohio House Bill 479, homeowners approved for the 2026 Homestead Exemption are expected to receive an additional discount of approximately $450 on their January 2027 property tax bill. The exact amount may vary based on final calculations from the State of Ohio.

Current Homestead recipients do not need to reapply for the additional discount. It will be applied automatically.

New applicants must apply by October 30, 2026, to receive the additional savings on their January 2027 property tax bill.

Who may qualify?

Homeowners may qualify if they meet the program’s household income requirements and are:

• Age 65 or older
• Totally and permanently disabled
• The surviving spouse of a previous Homestead recipient and age 59 or older

For these applicants, 2025 household income must be $41,000 or less. Social Security income does not count toward this limit.

There is no income limit for:

• Veterans rated or compensated as 100% disabled
• Surviving spouses of first responders who died in the line of duty
• Ohio homeowners who received the Homestead Exemption before 2014
